Tour of Carlsbad

Today is the first day I can remember that Jen and I both woke up before the girls. It was strange to be awake at 6:30 and not have them up and about. I looked out the window towards the ocean:

and saw a beautiful morning awaiting me. I pulled on my shoes and headed out the door. I've decided that I like hot-and-dry or cool-and-humid, but not the hot-and-humid we've had in Phoenix the past few weeks. It was in the mid-60's again this morning-- with a crazy 93% humidity! But it felt perfect!

I walked down to the intersection of Tamarack Rd. and Carlsbad Blvd./Historic Route 101/Coast Highway/San Diego County SR-21/El Camino Real. I stretched a bit on the sidewalk railing:

and watched the surfers doing their thing. The waves were good this morning, so there were tons of people in the water-- old guys, young guys, yuppies, beach bums, long boarders, short boarders and everyone in between.

I hit play on my iPod shuffle. Today's soundtrack was the trance/dub remix album Hallucinogen in Dub by Ott, which is a little more downtempo than the Podrunner mixes I've been listening to. It's a 47-minute continuous mix, and makes a good soundtrack for an easy run.

I started my run by heading north along The Street of Many Names. I passed the Harbor Fish Cafe (where we had dinner on Sunday night), the Daily News Cafe, Cold Stone Creamery (where we've had ice cream almost every night since we got here), St. Michael's By the Sea Church (cuz God is a surfer, ya know) and down to a small park at the corner of Cypress St. and TSoMN.

I headed west on Cypress St. and then back south on Ocean St., which runs right along the ocean (duh!). I continued along Ocean St., past the Harbor Fish Cafe and hooked back up with TSoMN. I continued along past my starting point, past the giant power plant and up the hill I blogged about Monday. I reached the top feeling a little sore, so I stopped and stretched for a minute. Then I turned and headed back downhill. I was feeling fine at this point, and started looking for someone to chase. Most of the runners and bikers were heading in the opposite direction, but I identified a couple walkers that were almost at the traffic light where I would be stopping. I picked up my pace, chugging up the uphill. It looked like they would reach the light before me, so I picked it up even more. I passed them about 15 feet before the light. "In yo face, suckas!!" It's small victories like this that make life fun! :)

I walked around a bit, and then went over to the railing along the beach to stretch. As I did, the album I was listening to ended. It fades out to the sound of waves crashing on the beach. And as it faded out, I could hear the sound of the Pacific Ocean.

Fun!
